If you have type 1 or type 2 diabetes, there are a number of important steps you should take to control your condition. While there is no known cure for diabetes, scientific advancements and research have given us the knowledge to effectively manage the disease.

Charles River Medical Associates created the Diabetes & Nutrition Education program to give patients the proper training to self-manage diabetes. While taking prescribed medication to treat diabetes is crucial, properly caring for your condition through nutritional choices is also an important part of living a healthy life.

What is diabetes?

Both type 1 and type 2 diabetes are serious chronic conditions characterized by an excess of sugar in the bloodstream.

In type 1 diabetes, the body’s immune system attacks the pancreas and inhibits its ability to produce insulin. Insulin is the molecule responsible for converting glucose from food into the energy your body needs to function. A lack of insulin means the body cannot use sugar for energy, which causes sugar to accumulate in the body.

With type 2 diabetes, insulin production may be normal, but the cells in the body do not use it properly. This also causes a build-up of sugar in the bloodstream. Persistent high blood sugar levels can cause numerous problems throughout the body, including atherosclerosis, nerve damage, and kidney disease.

In both type 1 and type 2 diabetes, excess sugar may show up as elevated levels in the urine. Consequently, one of the most common symptoms of diabetes is frequent urination with an inability to quench one’s thirst. If you are experiencing frequent urination and persistent thirst, you should immediately seek medical attention, as this could be a sign of dramatically high blood sugar levels caused by diabetes.

Run by experienced registered dietitians and nurse practitioners, our Diabetes & Nutrition Education program offers individual sessions to educate you about your diabetes and give you the tools that you need to properly care for your health. This program is covered by insurance. Most of the visits are virtual, but we also offer in-person sessions in Framingham.
